Official Security & Architecture Overview
A comprehensive guide on local application security, device pairing, and protecting digital assets without cloud credentials.
Ledger Live functions primarily as a standalone local application installed directly on desktop computers or mobile devices. Unlike conventional online services, it does not rely on a centralized web account or external cloud server to verify your identity. Accessing the interface requires launching the installed software rather than signing into a website portal.
Your private keys remain exclusively within the hardware device's Secure Element chip. The desktop or mobile interface merely acts as an informative portal showing blockchain account balances, transaction history, and preparing transfers. Every outbound transaction must be physically confirmed on the hardware wallet buttons.
When configuring local access, users can establish an optional password lock to protect privacy on shared machines. This local password encrypts cached balance data stored on the machine. It does not exist on any external server and cannot be reset through standard email retrieval links or support agents.
Legitimate hardware wallet ecosystems operate without web-based login pages. Any website prompting for your 24-word recovery phrase, secret passphrase, or device PIN under the guise of an account login, software update, or database migration is fraudulent. Your recovery phrase exists exclusively as an offline physical backup and must never be entered into web browsers, text documents, password managers, or cloud backups.
To maintain optimal operational security, always obtain client software directly from official distribution repositories and verify digital signatures prior to running executables. If your local device requires re-synchronization, connect your physical hardware wallet using a verified USB cable and inspect all transaction parameters directly on the built-in screen before authorising cryptographically signed messages.
